Opticomm-EMCORE’s remote broadcast applications include television control rooms, live production, outside broadcast/mobile broadcasting, and post-production. As example of a live production scenario utilizing an intra-facility broadcast fiber link, sixteen 3G HD-SDI video cameras, along with sixteen tallys and bidirectional audio, are sending signals to a control room. A “tally” is when a camera is live and its light is on, a data signal is sent to the control room that it’s on, making use of a contact closure card to send the on/off data. Bidirectional audio is there so the camera director can talk to the control room and vice versa.
Opticomm-EMCORE can get an entire rack of equipment for this scenario onto a single fiber, using CWDM and DWDM technology! The recommended setup uses Optiva system transmitter cards, including:
- Seven OTP-2HDP cards for 2-channel 3G HD-SDI transport
- Four OTP-4BA cards terminal block audio cards for a total of sixteen bidirectional channels of terminal block audio
- Two OTP-8C contact closure data cards for a total of sixteen tally channels (OTP-8C is OTP-4C with an additional port on the card)
The audio and contact closure cards are daisy-chained together using the same optics. All of this is then routed through four MDM-7016 cards, which multiplexes all sixteen signals onto a single fiber for long distance transmission to the control room. There it is received by another four MDM-7016 cards, which then demultiplexes the signals to an identical setup as described above, only with receivers instead of transmitters.
